TMS FAQS

Questions about TMS treatment in Chicago

Is TMS a legitimate treatment?

Yes. TMS is an evidence-based, noninvasive treatment, and TMS devices have been FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder since 2008. It is commonly considered when antidepressant medication has not provided satisfactory improvement.

TMS may not be appropriate for someone with nonremovable magnetic metal near the head, other than standard dental work, or certain implanted electronic devices. Seizure history and other neurological risks require further review. We evaluate your devices, medications, and health history before recommending treatment.

The main drawbacks are the treatment schedule, temporary discomfort, and no guaranteed response. Common side effects include scalp discomfort and headache; tingling, facial muscle movement, or brief lightheadedness may also occur. Seizures are rare.

A typical course involves five sessions per week for four to six weeks. Sessions commonly last 20–40 minutes, although the exact schedule and session length depend on your treatment protocol and clinical response.
There is no single TMS success rate. For treatment-resistant depression, published studies commonly report meaningful improvement in about 50%–60% of patients and remission in about 30%–35%. Results vary by diagnosis, protocol, treatment history, and individual response.

Yes. TMS is not a guaranteed permanent cure, and depression symptoms can return. Some patients maintain improvement for months or longer, while others may need continued medication, therapy, maintenance TMS, or another treatment course.

Alternatives may include antidepressant medication, psychotherapy, combined medication and therapy and electroconvulsive therapy for severe or urgent depression. The right option depends on your symptoms, treatment history, health, and preferences.

There is no single TMS therapy cost. Your out-of-pocket amount depends on your insurance benefits, deductible, coinsurance, treatment protocol, and number of sessions. Mindful TMS accepts Medicare and most commercial plans and provides complimentary benefits verification before treatment. Flexible self-pay plans and CareCredit may also be available.
